Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What substances are in tap water that could endanger our health?
A. Water authorities, water utilities and water treatment plants are introducing into our water disinfectants (such as chlorine and ammonia) which bind to organic substances in the water and produce carcinogenic chlorogenic derivatives (THM’s). There are also other naturally occurring substances such as calcium (tartar or lime) which can even be beneficial and not pose a health problem. However, lime or tartar can damage appliances, water pipes, plumbing systems and solar water heaters and reduce water heating efficiency.
Q. What are THM’s (Trihalomethanes)?
A. During the chlorination process, THM’s are formed when chlorine is used to treat surface water from rivers and lakes to make it safe for drinking. Long-term exposure to the Trihalomethanes (THM’s) could increase the risks of getting bladder or colon cancer and could cause damage to the heart, lungs, liver, kidney and central nervous system.
